{"id":552,"date":"2012-05-30T20:05:59","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T20:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulgurney.com\/whats_new_blog\/?p=552"},"modified":"2012-05-30T20:08:35","modified_gmt":"2012-05-30T20:08:35","slug":"instead-of-closing-the-achievement-gap-computers-are-widening-the-time-wasting-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulgurney.com\/whats_new_blog\/2012\/05\/instead-of-closing-the-achievement-gap-computers-are-widening-the-time-wasting-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"Instead of closing the achievement gap, computers are widening the time-wasting gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Modern digital time wasting has been studied extensively this past year&#8230; and the results are in: the &#8220;digital divide&#8221; between haves and have-nots has been closed, but people are using their new tools to waste more time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDespite the educational potential of computers, the reality is that their use for education or meaningful content creation is minuscule compared to their use for pure entertainment,\u201d said Vicky Rideout, author of the decade-long Kaiser study. \u201cInstead of closing the achievement gap, they\u2019re widening the time-wasting gap.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Danah Boyd, a researcher of digital culture, wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAccess is not a panacea.\u201d said Danah Boyd, a senior researcher at Microsoft. \u201cNot only does it not solve problems, it mirrors and magnifies existing problems we\u2019ve been ignoring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like other researchers and policy makers, Ms. Boyd said the initial push to close the digital divide did not anticipate how computers would be used for entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe failed to account for this ahead of the curve,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A study published in 2010 by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that children and teenagers whose parents do not have a college degree spent 90 minutes more per day exposed to media than children from higher socioeconomic families.
