{"id":188,"date":"2011-03-31T13:59:08","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T13:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulgurney.com\/whats_new_blog\/?p=188"},"modified":"2011-04-30T13:03:17","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T13:03:17","slug":"concerns-about-cell-phone-radiation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulgurney.com\/whats_new_blog\/2011\/03\/concerns-about-cell-phone-radiation\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns about cell phone radiation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report by the\u00a0Journal of the American Medical Association (<a title=\"Cell phone radiation report\" href=\"http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/content\/305\/8\/808\" target=\"_blank\">download report<\/a>) expresses concern that radiation emissions from modern smartphones and cell phones could pose a health risk.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit organization <strong>The Environmental Working Group<\/strong> has a <a title=\"phone radiation list\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/cellphoneradiation\/Get-a-Safer-Phone\" target=\"_blank\">useful list<\/a> of the radiation values (SAR) for most modern cellphones.<\/p>\n<p>The NYTimes compiled some <a title=\"Useful cellphone handling advice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/31\/technology\/personaltech\/31basics.html\" target=\"_blank\">helpful advice<\/a> (edited here for brevity):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Tilt the phone away from your ear when you are talking and only bring it in close to your ear when you listen<\/li>\n<li>Wait until <em>after<\/em> your call has been connected to put your cellphone next to your ear<\/li>\n<li>Cellphones emit less radiation when <em>stationary<\/em> because when you are  moving rapidly \u2014 say, in a car \u2014 it must repeatedly issue  little bursts of radiation to make connections with different  towers as it moves in and out of range<\/li>\n<li>If your cellphone has a <strong>weak signal<\/strong> it has to work harder and thus will emit more radiation<\/li>\n<li>Texting, instead of talking, could be safer<\/li>\n<li>Keep them at a distance by putting them on <em>speaker mode<\/em> or using a <em> wired<\/em> headset<\/li>\n<li>The next best option is a <em>wireless<\/em> Bluetooth headset or earpiece, which emit radiation at lower levels.<\/li>\n<li>Holding your phone away from  your ear can make a big difference; the <strong>intensity<\/strong> of radiation  diminishes quickly with distance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"Microwave News articles\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microwavenews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microwave News<\/a> is a good source of techie phone information too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new report by the\u00a0Journal of the American Medical Association (download report) expresses concern that radiation emissions from modern smartphones and cell phones could pose a health risk.
